GENTEXT/REMARKS/1. Orig requests widest dissemination to all Aviation
Ordnance
activities/personnel and highly encourages each command to submit a
nomination for this highly prestigious award. This is an outstanding
opportunity to recognize your top performer from the Aviation Ordnance
profession from both the US Marine Corps and US Navy.
2. The 2026 John W. Finn Aviation Ordnanceman of the Year (AOY) will be
selected at the 49th Association of Aviation Ordnancemen (AAO) convention
which will occur on 30 July through 1 August 2026 at the Silver Legacy
Resort in Reno, NV. All Aviation Ordnancemen (Navy and Marine Corps, Officer
and Enlisted, Active duty and Retired) and civil service employees with
ordnance involvement, are cordially invited to attend this year's
convention. Separate AAO convention message to follow.
3. The AAO requests commands nominate deserving personnel for the John W.
Finn AOY award. Only one nomination per unit will be accepted. Nominations
are open to active duty and reserve Aviation Ordnancemen from the US Marine
Corps and US Navy serving in paygrades E-5 and E-6. Endorsements, other than
from the individual's Commanding Officer, are neither required nor desired.
4. This award is named after LT John W. Finn, Medal of Honor recipient from
World War II, who was recognized for his heroic actions during the attack on
NAS Kaneohe Bay, territory of Hawaii, on 07 December 1941. Mr. Finn passed
away on 27 May 2010 at the age of 100.
5. Ensure strict compliance with the stated nomination requirements.
Candidates should be nominated for their professionalism, military bearing,
and community service, with special emphasis placed on sustained superior
performance as expressed in our US Navy and US Marine Corps core values of
honor, courage, and commitment. The period of service recognized by this
award is from 1 August 2025 to 30 July 2026.
6. Provide the following:
a. Full Name, Rate/Rank.
b. Date and place of enlistment.
c. Advancement history, Rank/Date of Rank.
d. Dependents (list names of children).
e. A brief synopsis of significant professional achievements that warrants
selection.
f. Personal military awards (Flag LOC, NAM, NCM, etc.) with supporting
citations.
g. Off-duty Ordnance related community involvement.
h. Commanding Officers' comments.
7. Enclosures:
a. Enclosure (1): Biography - Narrative starting from date and place of
birth, education, military service, current assignment, awards/medals,
family, etc. (Note: limited to two (2) double-spaced type written pages).
b. Enclosure (2): 5x7 full-length photo, three-quarter view, plain
background, Service Dress White uniform (USN)/Dress "B" uniform (USMC),
uncovered (a personal digital camera may be utilized).
c. Enclosure (3): A copy of the three most recent evaluations (front and
back).
d. Enclosure (4): Joint Services Transcript (https://jst.doded.mil)
Combination Report. If there are additional classes/degrees not listed on
this report, attach official class completion certificates and/or degrees.
Ensure complete report is submitted, do not omit the "Summary" or "Academic
Institution Courses" sections.
e. Enclosure (5): Personal award citations only (Flag LOC, NAM, NCM, etc..).

9. Nominations for the John W. Finn AOY award must be received NLT COB 17
July 2026. No packages will be accepted after the deadline. Request
submitting commands provide an email address to ensure they can be sent a
confirmation email that subject nomination package was received and verified

10. The winner will be announced at the AAO Awards Banquet which will be
held on 1 August 2026.
